AstroCampers observed or celebrated astronomy highlights that were in the news concurrent with AstroCamp 2009:

  • 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing;

  • Rare, new impact site visible on Jupiter;

  • 2009 International Year of Astronomy;

  • Space Shuttle Endeavour  docked to International Space Station, with a total of 13 crew members;

  • Total solar eclipse over China.

"Student stargazers abound at Camp Eberhart; Camp teaches children about astronomy."  Story by Tribune Correspondent DL Perrin appears in the July 28, 2009, issue of the South Bend Tribune. 

The AstroCamp 2009 staff and resident astronomer Darren Drake were joined by guest visitors:

  • Patrick Stonehouse, discoverer of the comet bearing his name, from Wolverine, MI

  • Ruth Craft, director of the planetarium at Kennedy School in South Bend, IN

  • Dan Joyce, master telescope maker and observer, from Chicago, IL
